01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Tucked into a residential pocket of Machiya in Tokyo's Arakawa Ward, Blackhole Coffee Roaster looks very much like a dedicated roasting workshop, complete with an in-house machine. Open the door, and the sweet aroma of roasting fills the room, accompanied by jars of beans selected and roasted by the owner. Even if you are not well-versed in coffee origins, the proprietor is happy to consult on your preferred flavour profile and home-brewing method, making it an approachable place to discover what suits your palate best.

Hand-sorting and roasting that highlight origin character

The line-up spans familiar terroirs such as Colombia, Ethiopia, and Kenya alongside occasional lots from origins like Nepal and Rwanda. Roasts are designed to highlight each bean's inherent profile, yielding everything from bright, fruity acidity to clean, elegant finishes that retain clarity even as the cup cools. Raw beans are hand-sorted prior to roasting to ensure consistency, producing polished batches suitable for home use or as understated gifts.

Takeaway variations and everyday decaf

Beyond whole beans, the shop offers cups poured fresh to order for takeaway. Alongside standard iced coffee with gentle bitterness and deep aroma, drinks include an iced coffee spritz combining sparkling water with bright acidity, as well as a rich honey coffee milk. Decaffeinated beans are also given careful roasting attention; whether sipped slowly black as the cup cools or paired with milk, they preserve aromatic depth for those moderating caffeine intake.

The roastery operates primarily from Friday through Sunday, opening around midday and running through the late afternoon. It serves just as well as a takeaway stop during a quiet stroll through the neighbourhood as it does for lingering over a bean selection to brew at home.
